Tennis teams clinch GLVC tourney berths

Lewis' men's tennis team has garnered its first Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament berth in six years following a win against Quincy on April 17.
Squaring off against Quincy, Lewis was carried by redshirt freshmen Uno Lapimaa and Tonis Irdoja, each with two wins in the match against the Hawks. In addition, senior Ben Karas picked up two victories, including the match-clinching victory.
Lapimaa took victories in the No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0 over Quincy's Rodrigo Marroquin and paired with Irdoja for a No. 1 doubles match over the team of Quincy's Baxter Grace and Brian Silverstein 8-2.
Irdoja took a victory in the No. 2 singles against Alonso Marroquin 6-0, 6-0 along with the doubles match with Lapimaa.
Karas paired with freshman Balazs Somogyi claimed a 9-8 victory in No. 2 doubles and also came away with the victory in No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Quincy's Grace, securing the match for the Flyers.
Lewis takes on No. 1 Drury in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament today, April 24.
Having already clinched a GLVC Tournament berth, the Lady Flyers took on Quincy in GLVC action on April 17.
Graduate student Melanie Sandberg and freshman Katie Hargrove helped the Flyers along the way to a 5-4 victory, each contributing two wins.
In the No. 2 singles, Sandberg defeated Quincy's Lauren Henry 6-1, 6-2 and also picked up a victory in the No. 1 doubles, paired with Hargrove to defeat Quincy's team of Henry and Anele Novak 8-5.
Hargrove took her second victory in the No. 3 singles by beating Michelle Bertelsman 6-1, 6-1.
The Flyers also took wins in the No. 3 doubles and No. 3 singles with sophomore Clare Kessler and freshman Maggie Novack pairing up to defeat Bertelsman and Bernadette Hayden and Lewis senior Agata Wojciechowski winning 6-2, 6-0 over Novak.
The Flyers finish the campaign 10-10 and 4-6 in GLVC play and begin play in the GLVC Tournament against Drury on April 24.
