Matt Michalak, a freshman majoring in business, is excited to be spending his summer with his friends in Poland. Being of Polish decent, Michalak is hoping to learn everything he can about his family's history and the culture of the people.
"I always assume that just because my family is Polish, every Polish family does things the same way. It's going to be weird and exciting to see the differences," he said.
Besides visiting the numerous amounts of museums and small villages, Michalak is most excited to visit the authentic Polish restaurants. The one month long trip will include visits to The Tatras Mountains, the famous city of Warsaw and the Wawel Royal Castle. The only thing Michalak can say that he is not looking forward to is the ten and a half hour plane ride.
Another freshman at Lewis University will also take a long plane ride out of the country this summer. Chris Selefski, an Accounting major, will be spending his summer in Italy. His trip will consist of visiting ten of the most famous cities in Italy such as Rome, Florence, Sicily, Milan and Naples. Like Michalak, Selefski is most excited to taste the authentic marinara sauce and the many different types of pasta. This is Selefski's second trip to Europe, although it will be his first time visiting Italy.
"I am really looking forward to visiting Venice and riding in a gondola. The movies make it look like a lot of fun," he said. Selefski and his family will be gone for three weeks.
Kathryn Girten will also be leaving the country this summer. Girten, a freshman majoring in social work, will be attending a private institution also located in Florence, Italy. Middlebury's School is located in the center of Florence's booming city life. Surrounding the area includes numerous bookstores, coffee shops and cultural clubs. Girten hopes to extend her education in the city by visiting the many museums and the artistic buildings.
"I'm most excited to visit the carefully designed churches. They are so old and beautiful, and full of so much history," she said. Girten will also be spending her month and a half with young children, showing them around the beautiful city, as well as learning more herself.
Not only will these three Lewis students be gaining cultural knowledge and learning how other people live, but they will also have an amazing experience outside of the United States border.
