It is not easy to choose a standout player from a team that has a 27-6 overall record and finished the regular season undefeated at home (16-0). However, leading the team in kills (375) and second on the team in digs ( 271), junior Stephanie Sagat is definitely a worthy candidate.

Sagat is an offensive and defensive threat that opponents must account for each and every time they take on the No. 21 Flyers.

As a freshman at Lewis, Sagat started 22 games at outside hitter and led the team in kills per set (3.26). She finished third on the team with 349 kills and recorded 304 digs. Sagat was named the Great Lakes Region Freshman of the Year.

Sagat credits a family members passion for the game as the reason she got involved in the sport.

"My mother introduced me to volleyball when I was in fourth grade," Sagat said. "She is the one who definitely got me hooked."

Looking to expand her skill set, Sagat began playing club volleyball only two years later. She got her club start at Gravity Volleyball Club located in Willowbrook, Ill. and moved on to play for Lions Junior Volleyball Club in Western Springs, Ill. in the seventh grade. Sagat played for Lions Volleyball Club until she graduated from Hinsdale South High School.

For Sagat, volleyball provides her with a chance to hang out with friends who are as passionate about the game as she is while also learning new skills to enhance her own abilities.

Now in her third year with the Lewis Volleyball program, Sagat continues to build on her game. Sagat feels that there is always room for improvement.

"When I hit outside, I need to try to better the ball," Sagat said. "Therefore, I need to get better at looking at my block and the court before I hit and consistently mix up my shot."

Before each match, Sagat likes to look through the scouting report so she is acclimated with the game plans of the opposing teams. Along with looking at the scouting report, music gets her pumped up for the competition.

Even with the amount of success Sagat is having this season, she continues to remain modest.

"Since volleyball is such a huge team sport, I definitely credit this [my success] to my teammates," Sagat said. "If we do not put up a great pass, then no one would be able to hit well, but since we are determined to be as perfect as possible, it helps me out as well as the rest of my teammates."
