Described as a caring and loving individual by her co-workers, Michelle will be greatly missed by Lewis staff and students. A graduate of Thornwood High School in South Holland, Michelle earned her bachelor's degree in social work from Lewis in 1995. She was employed in the Business Office as a student, and after graduation, began working there full time as a receivables clerk. In 1999, she was promoted Assistant to the Bursar and was appointed Bursar in 2001. "She was the kind of person to think of others first," said co-worker Rob DeRose, Vice President for Business and Facilities. "She was very student-oriented and really put her heart into the job."
Michelle helped Lewis University grow, and helped many students make their academic goals a reality. She also was noted for her volunteer activities, including work on the United Way Campaign. She was the recipient of an employee Rewards & Recognition (R&R) Award in 2001 and received the University's Science Award on more than one occasion.
A memorial gathering and Mass of the Resurrection were held for Michelle February 9 on the Lewis main campus.
"She was always doing something for somebody else," said DeRose. "Sometimes it seemed I saw her more than my family, she was always doing something here at Lewis or in the community. We truly have lost a family member."
Michelle Ryan set an example not only for students, but also for faculty and staff at Lewis. She was a giving person that will be remembered here at Lewis for her many good deeds.
