Lewis University Athletics took a big step forward on Oct. 21. The NCAA Division II Compliance Committee ended a four-year probationary period stemming from various NCAA violations. "Everyone is very excited," Athletic Director Dan Schumacher said. "We have all been looking forward to this date to lift the restrictions off of us.
Students hoping to have a football team added to the Lewis University Athletics program will have to wait at least another six months. At a recent board meeting, the possibility of adding football to Lewis was delayed as a direct result of the economic struggles being experienced today.
The Lewis men's and women's Cross Country teams competed at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships in Rolla, Mo. on Oct. 25. The men's team finished in sixth place, and the women's team turned in a fifth place finish. Coming into the season, the men had hopes of a top three finish; so naturally, Coach Adrien Ricci was not satisfied with their sixth place effort.
It is not easy to choose a standout player from a team that has a 27-6 overall record and finished the regular season undefeated at home (16-0). However, leading the team in kills (375) and second on the team in digs ( 271), junior Stephanie Sagat is definitely a worthy candidate.
The Flyers finished the season on a high note heading into the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament, with a two-game winning streak and an 11-game unbeaten streak. Facing off against Missouri-St. Louis on Friday, Oct. 24, the Flyers took a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Cory Mastey off a free kick from junior Justin Vander-Heyden just 22 minutes into the match.
A 26-point effort from sophomore Jenny Turpel wasn't enough to propel the Lewis women's basketball team past the Division I Bradley Braves on Nov. 2. The game was an exhibition match held in East Peoria, Ill. The Flyers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after senior Kelly Dianis drained a three-pointer at the 19:15 mark of the first half.
In the exhibition opener for the Lewis men's basketball team fell to the Bradley Braves 74-61. Lewis was led by senior Jason Genova's 20 points in the game. Genova shot 44 percent from the field and went 5 for 11 from three point range in 32 minutes of action.
